Executive Director
Hearts & Hands of Indiana, a housing corporation of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, seeks a full-time Executive Director who is a visionary, a passionate leader, and an agent of positive change. The ideal candidate is a professional who possesses excellent strategic and managerial skills, is both decisive and flexible, is a good listener and communicator, and is a strong advocate of Hearts & Hands’ mission. The position requires a strong commitment to the Near West Indianapolis community as well as an understanding of and appreciation for other key public and private partners who can offer additional resources to the work of community development. The Near West is a multi-ethnic community with diverse personalities, cultures, and economic backgrounds, so the ability to work in a diverse community is critical.
The Executive Director is responsible and accountable to the Board of Directors for the effective and efficient financial, operational, and administrative management of Hearts & Hands of Indiana. The Executive Director provides overall leadership for the organization in accordance with the policies, objectives, and directions of the Board of Directors to promote the overall vision, direction, stability, and growth of the organization.

The Executive Director provides overall leadership for the organization in accordance with the policies, objectives, and directions of the Board of Directors to promote the overall vision, direction, stability, and growth of the organization.
Example of Position Duties
General Leadership and Administration:
- Lead and direct the implementation of the strategic plan
- Develop and recommend to the Board of Directors specific long- and short-range plans of development for Hearts & Hands
- Maintain appropriate relations with the Board and various committees, keeping them informed
- Maintain sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with partners, community groups, organizations, and government entities
- Ensure that the organization is in compliance with all grant and contract performance requirements
- Manage and lead the daily office operations, including the design, development, and implementation of financial controls and administrative policies and procedures
- Facilitate, participate in, and implement local planning related to housing
- Direct fiscal control, accountability, and budget reporting
- Manage the creation and tracking of the annual budget, with guidance from the Board
- Approve all operational and building expenditures
- Ensure that all schedules related to house rehabilitation are met
- Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its goals and objectives
- Demonstrate broad understanding of principles of financial management using cost-benefit thinking to set priorities
Fundraising and Public Relations:
- Direct the process of research and application for grants to augment funds provided for overhead costs and building homes
- Identify, establish, and maintain personal contact with current and prospective donors
- Use the full complement of the fundraising process to support Hearts & Hands’ mission
- Set specific objectives to effectively advance solicitation of major contributions and grants
- Prepare proposals and solicit prospects for gifts in support of the organization’s strategic plan and fundraising priorities
- Ensure that Hearts & Hands is a good steward of its resources
- Provide a positive visibility of Hearts & Hands in the community
- Be the face of and represent the organization in various meetings and engage in public policy that brings visibility and thoughtful leadership to important issues
- Ensure the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to stakeholders
- Deepen and refine all aspects of communication – from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
- Publicize the activities of the organization, its programs, and its goals
- Complete the Archdiocese’s Safe and Sacred Program
Human Resources and Board Development:
- Lead, hire, train, inspire, motivate, and guide staff and volunteers toward common goals by maintaining a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff
- Direct the recruitment of community members to serve on the Hearts & Hands Board of Directors and committees, according to organization objectives and guidelines
- Encourage staff, board, and volunteer development and education
- Assist in providing new Board Member orientation
Position Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or extensive career experience in community development
- Knowledge of fundraising, real estate, neighborhood and housing issues, project management, and/or nonprofit management
- Excellent written and oral communication and listening skills
- Leadership, management, and interpersonal skills to motivate external stakeholders, all levels of staff, board members, and volunteers
- Ability to work effectively with public (local, state, and federal) agencies and officials
- Experience in representing an organization to the media and public, including public speaking and marketing
- Cultural competency and ability to work in culturally and ethnically diverse environments
- Ability to speak Spanish is beneficial
- High level of personal and professional ethics
